Green Moms International: Eco Moms Around the World
It’s safe to say that all moms are concerned about their children’s health. They care about the air their kids breathe and the food they eat.
It’s no surprise, then, that moms are also some of the best everyday environmental heroes. Often, it’s the mom who reminds children to “eat your veggies and go outside to play.” Moms also do a lot of the shopping for environmentally conscious products.
In Korea as well as the United States, eco moms are making environmentally conscious decisions with their children’s health in mind.
A recent New York Times article about today’s “EcoMom” has caught the attention of the media in Korea, where the well-established term for green living is: chamsari, or well-being.
The well-being movement has reduced smoking amongst Korean men by nearly 20%. This alone is good news for Korean moms, who can worry less about their beloved sons suffering from smoking ailments.
In addition, well educated Korean eco-moms are also paying attention to what their children eat by shopping for organic foods. According to the Organic Trade Association (OTA), the ideal customer for organic foods in Korea is a “30 to 40 year old mother, in the top 30% socio-economic group, with a minimum university level education.” (Download this report, PDF.)
An article on eco moms this morning’s Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) mirrors the one in the NYT and reflects the mounting interest of Korean moms in protecting the environment and their children’s health.
As one Korean blog puts it, Korean moms are placing extra emphasis on “environmental protection we can make at home.”
