Endangered Iberian Lynx Killed by Motorist
A sad discovery in Huelva province: The body of a female Iberian lynx was found on the road between Almonte and El Rocío.
This is unfortunately the third Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) killed in Andalucía this year - and the second in just two weeks. In March, a female - pregnant with two kittens - was run over in Doñana. She had also been shot.

According to Typically Spanish, Juan Romero, spokesman for Ecologistas en Acción in Doñana, expressed concern over the lack of protection provided to the lynx regarding motorists.
Iberian lynx is “on the brink of extinction”
The IUCN classifies the Iberian lynx as critically endangered.
The latest survey results from Spain suggest a minimum of 84 and a maximum of 143 adults surviving in two breeding populations: iin the Coto Doñana and near Andújar in the eastern Sierra Morena … These populations are isolated from one another making them even more vulnerable … Current numbers are not sufficient for the survival of the species in the long term and experts agree the cat is now on the brink of extinction.
Tragically, the Iberian lynx could be the first cat since the saber-toothed cat to become extinct, 10,000 years ago.
