Central Zoo Authority Demands Release of Indian Elephants
Approximately 140 elephants are believed to be living in zoos and performing in circuses all around India, but according to the Central Zoo Authority, in a demand issued today, that will happen no more!

Although attractions like the Delhi Zoo are extremely popular with tourists, and the circuses bring families by the dozen for the sake of entertainment; officials from the Central Zoo Authority say that enough is enough when it comes to the mistreatment and unsuitable living conditions of these animals that require far more space than they’re provided in these settings to thrive.
Of course, these elephants will not be released in the wild as they have become more domesticated, but they will be released into National Parks and Animal Sanctuaries where handlers can ensure that their needs are being met, while providing with an element of freedom to remain in a habitat that is more naturally theirs. India also believes that this will be a great move for eco-tourism so while it is positive, there are some underlying motivations at play.
This directive with regards to the release of elephants will not require that those living in temples across the country, or those being used for work, to also be released into more desirable settings; it also does not address the widespread abuse taking place across the nation with those that are living wild in their natural habitat. However, it is a step in the right direction and perhaps one that will result in future progress to address the well-being of elephants mistreated in the wild, and living with less than suitable standards in other scenarios.

Yes, when you look at it from a “poachers” point of view, elephants are supposed to be shot then have their tusks hacked-off - not prance-around in Circuses !!
Elephants to be banished from all zoos: Great! Great! This is a Proud Moment for all Nature Lovers, all over the world! This landmark decision by the Central Zoo Authority will be a model for other Nations the world over to follow. Even in the United States people are still fighting in many States for such a modern legislation. Koti, Koti Namaskars for the Central Zoo Authority for this BOLD decision.
It is hoped all concerned authorities, Social and Religious Organisations, will come forward and implement this model rule wholeheartedly, leaving no room for the vested interests, in various grabs to interfere. It goes very much in tune with the true Indian Culture to respect Mother Nature – it should be implemented in letter and spirit by all to uphold the spirit of India.

I am so happy India is taking this step to get elephants out of circuses! That’s something the U.S. won’t even do! Taking a step such as this is definitely in the right direction and it motivates me more to visit India and experience its ecotourism offerings.
