The E-Charkha: Gandhi’s Vision of a Sustainable India Becomes A Reality

Over the span of the last century, the charkha or spinning wheel of India has symbolized non violence, independence and economic progress. Mahatma Gandhi, Father of the Indian nation, promoted the charkha during India’s freedom struggle as a symbol of self-reliance and as a source of income for the rural population. It was emblazoned on the flag of the Congress party, the political party that was built to govern India based upon Gandhi’s economic vision. Today, more than 50 years after independence, the charkha has also become a symbol of sustainable energy production.

Gandhi’s simple invention has inspired the development of an e-charkha, a hand-operated spinning wheel that produces yarn while functioning as an inverter. Launched by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) last November, while actually used for spinning yarn, the e-charkha can generate enough electricity to store and to power up the specially-designed LED light source

The advantage of electric spinning wheel to the housewife is that spinning the wheel for two hours charges the attached battery sufficient to energize domestic lights for 6-7 hours. While doing her daily work she can use this light. There is no need for kerosene lamps which pollute the environment,” said Babulal Sharma, Manager, Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), Jatwara.

Today is October 2nd, Mahtma Gandhi’s birthday. If economic progress and sustainability was truly his objective, then I think we all have cause to celebrate!
