This large format coffee table book is hard to resist. Rick Smolan, known for the “Day in the Life Of” book series, created this evocative and highly informative masterpiece. Many of the hotels are planning to keep a copy in their lobby to expose more people to the subject. The pictures and bold tidbits of data are hard to shake…and that is the point! The essays by Robert Redford, Paul Hawken and other well known environmentalists are captivating. The documented Blue Planet Run Around-The-World Relay is inspiring.
The timing could not have been better, as Oprah’s O Magazine also featured the book as one of Rachel McAdams’ favorite books in the April issue.
Clearly, the message is starting to flow to the masses. Over a billion people on the planet cannot access safe drinking water. Even more lack basic sanitation. Together, these two issues cause more deaths than cancer, war and HIV/AIDS combined!
- Half of all hospital beds are filled with people afflicted with a waterborne disease.
- A child dies ever 15 seconds from a water-related disease.
The partnership support from these hotels will hopefully further awareness, not only of the issues but also of the important day to recognize water. Given the fact that water is the most precious resource on the planet, let us consider celebrating water for World Water Day, Earth Day and everyday!
Water is life. Pass it on.
